Will Soccer in America Ever Get an Infusion of Cool?

Anyone who knows anything about pop culture, and hasn’t been living under a rock for the last 2 decades, knows that Snoop blows a lot of smoke, literally. However, when the Daily Record reported last year that “Snoop Lion was ready to shell out big bucks to invest in the Celtics” (the soccer club that doesn’t play in Boston, that is), what was the real story?
In the last couple of years, there have been several Hip-Hop and NBA stars that have been connected, albeit loosely in some cases, to the international soccer (football) world. To name a few, there’s Lebron with his minority ownership in Liverpool, Kevin Garnett with AS Roma, Kobe who’s favorite teams are Barcelona & AC Milan, and most recently, Jay-Z with reports of him looking to sign top international players under his new sports agent hat.
As for Snoop, he’s been quoted as saying:
“I got a lot of interest in soccer. It’s not a new thing for Hip Hop stars to invest in sports teams, but it is a new thing for Hip Hop stars to invest in soccer teams…”
So, what’s this about?
Will soccer in America finally get the infusion of cool that it so desperately needs? Or do superstar athletes and Hip-Hop stars see something that the majority of Americans fail to notice – Soccer, although the biggest sport in the world, is just getting its legs here.
