Senegal fans had every reason to celebrate on Tuesday.

They became the first African side to win at this year’s World Cup in a surprise 2-1 victory over Poland. But the jubilant scenes weren’t as wild as you might expect.

Videos have been shared showing the Senegal supporters clearing up after themselves at the Moscow stadium.

In a clip posted by Argentinian television channel TyC Sports, fans dressed in the green, yellow and red kit can be seen collecting leftover litter from under the seats in the stands. The footage of their impeccable manners has been viewed on Twitter over five million times.

“Senegal got a historic triumph,” a translation of the channel’s caption said. “But instead of partying minutes after finishing the game, the fans are in charge of cleaning their section before they leave. #Respect.”

Senegal fans weren’t the only ones to get stuck in to the clean up job. Some of Japan’s supporters also stayed to tidy up the Mordovia Arena in Saransk after their win against Colombia on Tuesday night.

Japan’s post-match work ethic was also seen during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, when supporters stayed behind to pick up rubbish after their game against the Ivory Coast. As McIntyre added, the respectful attitude is one we can learn from. After all, “that’s the beauty of football.”
